Hospitals Support Red-Light Cameras

HOUSTON – July 8 – Red light cameras may be just what the doctor ordered – actually, it’s exactly what the doctor ordered.

Three hospital groups in Texas said they will endorse the City of Houston’s Digital Automated Red Light Enforcement Program.

Memorial Hermann Healthcare System, the Texas Hospital Association and the Harris County Hospital District based their support on evidence regarding the impact cameras have had on local neighborhoods, according to a statement.

A 2009 study from the Texas Transportation Institute and Rice University found that in 50 Houston intersections, red light cameras reduced total collisions by 11 percent.

Red light running and rear-end collisions were reduced by 30 and 35 percent respectively.
